Authentic Cow Horn Powder Horn with Brass Fittings and Hand Carved Bear Head

Each time I see one of these great old handmade Powder Horns, I am fascinated by the workmanship that goes into them. Some are fairly plain and utilitarian, while others show far more creativity. In examining this very special one, we find a great deal of ingenuity went into its construction.

This horn measures a bit over 12 inches from the tip of the bear's nose to the tip of the pour spout, with the actual cow horn portion measuring about 10-1/2 inches. The wood base features an intricately carved bear head stopper. The bear even has tiny brass eyes. The stopper has a "collar" of two stationary brass rings, with a third ring freely rotating between them. This third ring has a triangular eyelet for attaching a carrying tether. Rather than a wood dowel closure, the wood bear head is mounted onto a hand fashioned threaded brass piece, for a secure fit.

At the small end of the horn, is a second set of brass rings, one stationary and the other a rotating ring with an eyelet for attachment. The particularly unique piece of this powder horn is its pour spout. The entire spout mechanism has been hand made using a brass shell casing, along with brass tubing. A very functional brass spring valve has been handcrafted and inserted through the shell casing. I realize that kits now exist, complete with valves etc., but the ingenuity and patience that goes into a totally handcrafted item like this one is amazing.

Although I cannot confirm the actual age of this item; I can personally validate it as well over 60 years old. It is a wonderful old "one of a kind" functional Powder Horn.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
