Shalimar by Guerlain, Paris - Rare 1998 Anniversary Perfume Bottle

Our sense of smell can have quite an effect on us. How many times has a certain scent suddenly brought memories flooding back to us? Even an empty perfume bottle can still harbor that tiny whiff that rekindles the past for us. That is our reason for offering these vintage bottles and scents in our Yesterday Revisited inventory. We can never be sure a scent will not have altered through time, so we are offering the bottles themselves and the contents is merely there.

Shalimar has been a well known and popular perfume scent that has endured since the 1920's. The scent itself was created at that time by Jacques Guerlain. The name means "abode of Love" in Sanskrit. The elegant fan-shaped bottle was designed by Richard Guerlain, specifically for Shalimar and the shape was not ever used for any other scent.

In the 1980's, I believe a version was produced with a blue plastic fan stopper, and those bottles are fairly easily found today. However, in 1998 an Eau de Parfum Anniversary Edition was released in a smaller quantity. These clear glass bottles are distinguishable by their clear plastic stopper, bearing the words Guerlain Paris in gold. I honestly cannot determine if the stopper is glass or plastic, but most research refers to plastic.

The front recessed panel bears only the words SHALIMAR and EAU DE PARFUM in gold, along with a delicate border. This is not a decal or sticker, but printed directly onto the glass. There is a sticker on the bottom that reads: 30ml 1 FL OZ,68, Champs Elysees 75008 Paris, Made in France, DT 232.

The bottle measures4" tall by 3" wide by 1-1/4" It has been opened and the contents partially used; however, there appears to be slightly over half of the contents still contained in the bottle. The stopper is quite secure in the bottle, so I have not removed it in order to preserve the contents as is.

The bottle is in very nice used condition. I understand it originally came in a lovely velvety box and were this one full and unopened in a box, it would command a very significantly higher price. We just hope to find a loving home where this bottle can perhaps recapture a memory.

We try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at least vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
