1895 Photographic Print - Baker's Art Gallery - Columbus, Ohio
This framed print hung on a wall in my grandparents hallway for as long as I can remember. I never knew if it was of a relative or just a heart-warming scene for decorative purposes. The sweet young girl gazing at the lady, perhaps her mother, and listening to the piano music is so realistic, one would feel they could step right into the picture.
In the lower left corner, is the notation, "Copyright 1895 Baker's Art Gallery Col. O." I have learned that Lorenzo Baker was an exceptional photographer of portraits and other subjects. His studio was located on High Street in Columbus, Ohio, and was in business for many years. Four generations of his family continued the business from 1886 through 1955. They then donated a collection of his glass film plates to the Columbus Historical Society. His studio was known for creating lovely backdrops, such as is seen in this photograph, and then placing the real props (pillows, the piano and bench, etc.) in the forground. Thus, it is difficult to tell which is real and which is the backdrop.
The actual print measures 7" by 9" and has been placed in a 13" by 15" frame. The print is in very good condition. My grandparents had placedit in the frame on top of a piece of paper with a linen look. That piece of paper hasa water mark stain on it, as does the cardboard backing, as shown in the photos. The frame is old and nice, with very minor wear to the corners. With a proper mat and slight touch-up on the frame corners, this print could become a lovely accent piece.
I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
