Siam Link Cuff Bracelet - Siam Sterling Silver - Mythical Goddesses of Lightening and Thunder and other Thai characters 6-5/8" length

This type of bracelet is known as Niello. In researching the pieces that we have, I found that Niello is a black metallic alloy of sulfer, copper, silver and lead that is used as a inlay on engraved metal. In the case of these bracelets from Thailand (formerly Siam) the primary material is a beautiful Sterling Silver. The engravings are four extremely detailed designs of figures, depicting the mythical goddess of Lightening (Mekkala), and a second female dancer. In addition, there is an elephant and I believe the god of Welcoming (Thepanom).

As I began my research, I also learned that the country of Siam ceased to exist in 1939, when it became Thailand. The term, and hallmark Siam Sterling continued to be used in connection with this beautiful jewelry that was produced there well into at least the late 70's. I also learned that during the Vietnam war, many soldiers went to Thailand and purchased pieces of this jewelry for their sweethearts back home. I do not know its exact age of this piece, but I believe it was likely from the 1940's or 1950's. The silver has an slightly older feel, but not as old as another piece that I can date prior to 1939.

The bracelet made of twelve panels, each 1/2" wide by 1" high. The hinges are all concealed, giving a continuous cuff appearance when worn. The clasp is likewise hidden and fits together very smoothly and securely, and releases with ease. Overall length is 6-5/8" (7-1/8" with the clasp). The diameter when closed is 2-1/4". The beauty of these jewelry pieces is that they are obviously hand made, yet they are handmade with a very high quality workmanship. The markings are "SIAM Sterling"on on end of the clasp, and "INTRA"on the other. I have no idea what that second marking means.

The condition of this bracelet is simply beautiful. The panels show no wear or scuffmarks at all, the silver is not scratched, dented or damaged in any way. I believe it has been only gently worn. Please contact me if you have questions.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
