Seltmann Weiden Bavaria -- Tea / Coffee / Luncheon Set - 1949-1954 - with Fruit and Nut Pattern

This is yet another set in my collection of vintage tableware that now needs a new home. To see it, and others, click on Tableware under the Procelain and China category in the menu at the left.

I purchased this vintage set some time back, for two reasons :

First, because the pattern of fruit and nuts, touched with gold on the sleekly styled pieces has such a contemporary / retro look. This was a set I could bring out to serve a casually elegant snack or dessert. Second, the minute I had picked up a piece, it had the distinctive feel of high quality old porcelain. If you collect old china pieces, you will likely know what I am referring to. I had no idea who the Seltmann Weiden company was, but I did know that Bavarian china was nice quality and that it was likely vintage, as the bottom stamps included "Western Germany". Eventually the gavel dropped and the auctioneer announced the prize was mine. It didn't matter to me whether I had made a "good buy", although I feel that I did, because I loved the set. If you are interested in the history of these pieces, read on, below the item descriptions.

This set consists of the following 29 pieces: (1) Coffee / Tea pot with lid -- 8-3/4" tall, (1) Creamer, (1) Covered Sugar Bowl, (1) 10" handled serving tray.
(4) Tea Cups with (4) Saucers, (4) Coffee Cups with (4) Saucers
note: the saucers are all the same diameter; however they differ in the center indention due to the variance in base size between the tea and coffee cups.
(8) Plates -- 7-1/2 inches in diameter for Salad / Dessert / etc. (1) Serving Plate -- also 7-1/2 inches, but a slightly different shaping. This plate and the serving tray have the Seltmann Weiden mark without the E or K, and perhaps this accounts for the variance. I found the extra plate came in handy for crackers or lemon slices.

We set about to research the origin of my treasure, and learned that Seltmann Weiden has been around since 1910. The Seltmann family had already been making porcelain for about ten years. The younger brother apparently opened his own factory in the town of Weiden, thus the name Seltmann Weiden. In 1939 and 1940, Seltmann Weiden took over the family factories in Krummennaab and Erbendorf. These two factories however were used to house American troops after WWII, and it was in 1949 that they again began producing fine porcelain ware. The backstamps Seltmann Weiden-K and Seltmann Weiden-E represent products of these two factories. These two backstamps were used only between the years of 1949 and 1954.
