ART GLASS EGG - CHINESE SCENIC REVERSE PAINTED - 5" TRANSLUCENT

(Photographs do not do this egg justice. Proper lighting really enhances the intricate designs.)

This is a lovely large egg that we encountered in yet another antique shop, We have found many "new" small reverse painted eggs and ornaments, but few are of this size and detail.

This egg displays nicely on its own carved wooden stand, which appears to be old and original with the piece. Apparently this is an ancient Chinese technique that has been used for many years and is now being used by modern artists. The egg is translucent, obviously mouth blown, and measures a full 5" tall without the stand. The diameter of the egg is slightly over 3-3/8". The egg itself weighs only 3-1/2 ounces, much thinner and lighter than others we have. The carved stand is made of a lightweight wood, and was purchased with the egg.

The reverse painting is done on the inside of the glass by the artisan, using the tiniest of brushes and instruments. Working through that small 3/8" hole in the bottom, the design is applied in fine line art, capturing the minute details of the oriental scenes, with waterfalls, mountains, flowers, and even a tiny boat and people. Then the colors have been meticulously applied in layers, still from the inside, working "backward" so that the background color of an area or flower is applied last. This is truly a lovely example of this tedious technique. There are no markings or signatures on this egg, but I believe it to be somewhat old and likely Chinese.

The egg is in wonderful condition with no flaws or damage that I can find. The photos truly do not do it justice. If placed where light can shine through it, it is even more captivating.
