U.S. Military Compass, Magnetic - Lensatic Compass - WW II Era

Research is ongoing for this item; however we do know that this design was also known as the M-1950 compass, and it was a revision of the original WW II Lensatic Compass. Known as the Compass, Magnetic Lensatic Compass, these were produced from 1950 on. This model was changed in shape to include a map scale and straight-edge on one side of the body, creating a more rectangular shape. There were an assortment of manufacturers of these items for the military, in the years following 1950.

This compass bears the markings "U.S." boldly, followed by the wording, "Manufactured by Brunson Instrument Co. Kansas City, Mo." and the date designation, 3-52 indicating it was produced in March of 1952. The compass is in very nice condition, appears to be working properly; although, not having ever used one of these complicated devices, I have no idea exactly how it is used. There are two fold-out sighting parts, one of which has a magnifying glass built into it, and a slot that lines up with the vertical wire affixed to the other one. It latches securely with a fold-over clip. It measures 3"x2-1/4"x1-1/4" thick, and has a carrying weight of only 5 ounces.

I will continue to seek information on this fascinating piece of military equipment, and will update this listing as I learn more. Needless to say it is a very durable and practical item for campers, hikers, scouts, etc., as well as a great collectible.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
