Pair of Blue Underglazed Hand Painted Vases - gold trimmed - Japanese

Our research of oriental items is just beginning, so we apologize for any inaccuracies in the descriptions of the items in this category. We welcome any input or corrections.

This pair of vases have such a subtle elegance to them, although I have been unable to come up with any definitive identification. They are decidedly hand painted because although the design is the same on both, each displays slight variances in the imagery. One has a slightly more prominent depiction of the bird, while the other has more emphasis on the plant decoration. Both have a softness about them that captures the attention.

The thick white pottery has the faintest of bluish cast (like skim milk), as a result I believe of the firing process of the blue glaze under the clear over-glaze. I was told this is referred to as "flow blue", but I do not know this for a fact. The gold trim has been added after the firing, or between firings. The photos do not clearly the extent of the gold trim. In addition to the obvious top rim, lower edge and handle trim, it appears that the tiniest of brushes has placed outlines and accents on some of the leaves etc.

Each vase stands 4-5/8" high and is 3-5/8" in diameter at the widest part. Each weighs just over 8 oz. They are both in exceptionally nice condition, with out any chips, cracks or damage that I can find, other that the slight wearing of the gold trim on the top rims. They have a clear mold mark on the bottom, and a blue marking that I would assume is the artist's mark, since they are not the same. I do not know the age of these, however, they have been in our possession for many years. We are selling them as a pair, as I don't believe that they should be separated.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
