G. & J.W. Hawksley Black Powder Flask - British early 1800's

G. and J.W. Hawksley of Sheffield, England, manufactured black powder flasks during the period 1830-1870. The flasks were constructed of brass and copper, with graceful shapes and ornate embossed designs. The charger spouts were adjustable and the company name was inscribed on the spout...

This powder flask is a wonderful example of the G. & J.W. Hawksley product. It is made in the "violin shape" with a nicely embossed leaf design with a wire basket weave design on the lower area. The design is repeated on both sides of the flask. It has four lanyard rings firmly attached. The charger spout has its spring intact and the adjustable mechanism appears to move freely. The Hawskley name appears on the spout.

An interesting note is that, where most of the G.& J.W. Hawksley charger spouts have four adjustments with markings from 21/4 to 3 drams, this model has only three adjustments. We believe this to be one of their very early models, and apparently exceedingly rare.

This one, measures about 8 inches with the spout adjusted outwards by just under 4 inches at its widest point.

This pieces is in incredibly nice condition, especially considering it is approximately 150 years old, and was obviously used extensively. It is clean, with no real damage that I can find. I do not attempt to clean or disassemble such items, as this is not my area of expertise and I would prefer to leave that to the purchaser. It does have a few minor dents from wear, but they only serve to add character. I have tried to photograph the flask to show the wear. The beauty of this piece to me is the smooth, satiny feel with the wear on parts of the embossed design from much handling.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition. Please contact us with any questions, or to request additional pictures, or contribute further information, by using the Contact tab on our Home page.
