LIONEL #511 Gondola - Pre-War Standard Gauge

The Lionel 500 Series cars are impressive, both from a size standpoint as well as from their bright colors and brass accents. Our favorite Greenberg's book tells us that this series was first introduced in 1927, and was manufactured until about 1940. The cars in this series were built on an 11-1/2" frame, have deeply embossed sides and brighter colors than their predecessors. We are currently offering several cars in this series for sale.

This car is the Lionel #511 Flat car with lumber load. It has a Dark Green body / frame. It has latch couplers on both ends, and 500 series trucks with nickel journals. The brake wheels are brass, along with 8 brass upright stakes for holding the lumber load. The words "Lionel Lines" is stamped onto each side and the number "511" is stamped on the underside of the frame. . The Lionel #511 measures 11-1/2" long by 3-1/2" wide by 3" high.

The trucks are fastened to the frame with a cotter pin passing through a king pin, indicating this one of the earlier cars. Both sets of trucks have nickel journals. The wheels are all intact, and in nice condition.

Looking at the underside, there is a very old Lionel sticker with oiling instructions and indicating "The Lionel Corporation New York".

Considering the estimated 70 year age of this car, I am surprised at the relatively nice condition. This car was obviously played with extensively, and has paint damage on all sides. The wood "load" is likewise weathered and worn, but solid and intact. Actually, my personal feeling, is that it gives the car a more authentic "real life" look. These were designed for children to play with, yet it has survived without the heavy rust and dents and such one would expect. If it has been repaired or restored in any way, it has been with the utmost care.

Please note: We have not tested any of the model trains on the website, as I unfortunately lack the knowledge to test them without damaging them, and I do not have the necessary track or transformers. I can say that the trains currently on this site came from a single collection in my family, and the owner would have likely maintained them. However, I must state that they are sold "as is". I try very hard to accurately describe the items on this site. However, if you have any questions, please email us by using the Contact tab on our Home page. I will be happy to provide additional pictures and answer any questions you may have.
