DeWitt Clinton - #41-500 HO Scale Locomotive and Tender
DeWitt Clinton - #41-500 HO Scale Locamotive and Tender (Rare) The DeWitt Clinton was one of America's Earliest Trains. This is an operating HO Scale Authentic Replica of the 1831 Locomotive and Tender, in its original box.

I find the exceptional detailing of these tiny trains incredible. It has a nickel silver wheels, the tiny water barrels and wood pile are die cast, and it has a motor, and can be run on regular HO track (not included).

This item is not antique or vintage itself. However, it is such a wonderful recreation of days gone by that we felt it deserved a place on our site. The DeWitt Clinton replicas were produced by Bachmann Industries, of Philadelphia. Bachmann offered both the Locomotive and Tender, shown here as their item #41-500, and a full Electric Train set, which included track, coaches, a power pack, etc. I believe the full set may still be offered; however I have not seen this Locomotive / Tender only set before.

The DeWitt Clinton was a truly unique type of train. The passenger coaches were actually standard stagecoaches, mounted on wheels to run on the railroad tracks. It was named after the father of the Erie Canal and was only the third public carrier to operate under steam in America. In August of 1831, it made the trip from Albany to Schenectady in 46 minutes.

I do not believe this Locomotive set has ever been out of the original box, except for my photographing. It is still in all of its original packing and has the accompanying paperwork. The box is slightly creased at the bottom. I have not set this up or attempted to run this train; however, I can say that the trains currently on this site came from a single collection in my family, and the owner would have likely checked them out .

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible. Because items we carry are vintage to antique, they are sold in "as is" condition.
