Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper -- August 10, 1861 -- Civil War Battle Engravings and Stories.

I will preface my description of this exceptional newspaper, with its accounts of the actual events of the Civil War, as they were happening, by stating that it is very likely that the Frank Leslie Illustrated Newspaper we have listed here is not the original item published in 1861. This paper, and the other four listed on our site, came from my father's collection of "all things Civil War related", and I believe that he was misled when he purchased them, as to their authenticity. We have learned through our research that all of the issues from 1860 thru 1867 were actually reproduced at one point. They were not made as "fakes" but as a reprinting of those great papers. The reprints were clearly marked with the wording "the reissue of" in small letters just above the Nameplate. The papers we have here do not have that wording, however it is somewhat apparent, upon close examination, that some type of bleach or ink eradicator may have been used in that area. One issue still shows the word "of" in that position. My father would never have done this, so I am confident he was probably deceived, or perhaps he simply saw the value in the content as opposed to the actual age. In keeping with our policy of never knowingly misrepresenting an item, we feel it appropriate to disclose our suspicions about these papers.

This issue is the August 10, 1861 issue and displays a number of the characteristic drawings used in the Frank Leslie newspapers. His representatives made actual sketches on location, and they were then made into wood engravings. These depictions would make wonderful framed prints. Since the papers are likely the reissues, I suppose one would not have to feel as if they were destroying an antiquity. The stories give quite vivid accounts of the happenings of the time, as well as a fun look at the advertising of the era. The political tone was also covered in these papers. Several had political cartoons that very nearly could be printed in our papers today.

These papers give a view of 1861 that greatly expands on the traditional history book descriptions, making them a very good read and a collectible piece of Civil War history. The papers measure 11-1/2 x 16 inches. The pages were consecutively numbered from issue to issue throughout the year, with each issue consisting of 16 pages. Please look at the photos, and feel free to ask for further information through the Contact Us tab at the top of our Home Page. The condition is acceptable to handle gently, although they do show signs of their age. I now keep them in acid free sleeves, and will pack them carefully for shipping.

Note: Should you decide to purchase more than one of these Illustrated Newspapers, I will combine and refund the excess shipping to you.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition. Please examine the pictures and contact us with any questions, to request additional pictures, or to contribute further information, by using the Contact tab on our Home page.
