Brush McCoy / Brush Pottery Onyx Rare 822-4 Vase / Planter -- 4-1/2"

Adding to our Pottery items, is this unique Brush McCoy Onyx small vase or planter. I refer to it as rare and unique because it is the only one like it that I have been able to locate.

The 822-4 vase / planter mold was used for a number of solid color or white pieces. However, I believe that this one may have been utilized in the earlier days of the onyx glazes. In my research, we learned that "..in the early onyx pieces the secondary color was stippled all over the ware". The glazes ran and blended during the firing process. The appearance was varied, but always beautiful. On this piece, there is a unique all-over stippling beneath the top glaze on the outside of the piece, with ony a few fleck inside the top rim. Perhaps the reason for the retained stippled effect was due to the pattern of ridges and indentations on the sides of the piece. Most of the onyx ware pieces had a more smooth shaping that made the flow of the glazes easier. This piece is really a striking example of the onyx process.

The markings on the bottom are deeply incised beneath the glaze. The mold number 822-4 is clearly visible as is the Brush name, with the USA below. We also learned though some of our research, that although the company changed from the Brush-McCoy Pottery name to just Brush Pottery in December of 1925, it is not always a clear way to date pieces by their marking. One sourse indicated that Brush-McCoy, sometimes only used the word "Brush" in markings...and much of their product was not marked at all. We feel comfortable in our guess-timate that this piece was produced in the mid 1920's.

The vase stands 4-1/2" tall and is 4-1/2" in diameter. It is in beautiful condition, with no damage that I can find. It displays beautifully and can be useful as well. We have three larger brown onyx pieces that we will be listing in the future.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
