Lefton China Large Wood Duck Figurines - Bisque Porcelain pair - Japan

Among our figurines, is this wonderful pair of Wood Ducks by Lefton China Company. Each of these figures is posed in a slightly different position, very much resembling the way we often see a real life pair of ducks. One, possible the female has its head tucked down and slighty to one side, while the other one is assuming a more protective posture, with its neck extended and its head in a very alert position. They are about 5-1/4" tall, measure approximately 6" from beak to tail, and are hand painted on porcelain bisque in beautifully intricate detail. On the bottom is the Lefton China crown in blue, gold and black, with red lettering "Lefton China. Hand Painted, Reg US Pat Office". Also "KW137A Wood Duck" and "KW137B Wood Duck" . One still has its Red and Gold Lefton's Japan label, while the other only has the remnants of its paper label.

The Lefton China Co was founded by George Zontan, who came to the Unites States from Hungary in 1939. He determined that there would be a sizeable market for quality porcelain china dishes and decorative pieces and proceeded to contract for them from Japan, long noted for lovely hand painted items. I cannot begin to imagine how many different items bore the Lefton Crown and familiar red and gold sticker. But I remember a number of pieces in our home as I was growing up in the 1950's.

There is a date significance, I understand, regarding the color of the crown logo, whether the item's name is printed or hand written, and there are two different labels, reading "Lefton" or "Lefton's". I am not at all sure which markings indicate which dates, so I will leave that determination to a collector more knowledgeable than myself. What I do know is that these wonderfully lifelike figurines make a great display and bring an extra flare to a table setting, when incorporated into a centerpiece.

These two figurines are in wonderful condition, with no sign of any damage to either of them that I have found.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition. Please contact us with any questions, or to request additional pictures, or to contribute further information, by using the Contact tab on our Home page.
