Vintage Childs Porcelain Tea Cups - Pink Floral - Japan - Early 1900's

This delicate set of porcelain teacups and saucers brings back memories of hours spent entertaining my dolls, or insisting my sister come join us for tea. This is one of two sets that we currently have on our site, each with three cups and three saucers. The floral design is slightly different on each set; however the actual size and shape is the same, along with the gold trim. Thus they could be used nicely together.

The little cups are 1-1/2 inches in diameter and stand about 1-1/2 inches tall. The set is white glazed china with a delicate pink design that resembles dogwood. Whether used for display or actual play, to revive a memory, or to create new ones, these little teacups have an elegant look and feel of the older Japanese pieces. I am surmising they date to the period between 1921 and WWII, due to their JAPAN backmark.

My research into dating vintage Japanese porcelain items has brought me to some criteria that I understand is correct in most instances. This set for instance is marked simply JAPAN, in dark red lettering that has been stamped beneath the final glaze of the pieces. We have learned that this was a marking used during the period from 1921 until 1939. Nothing was imported from Japan from 1939 to 1945. From 1945 until 1952 the Occupied Japan designation was used, and finally from then on the terminology Made in Japan was required. Based on this information I am assuming that this set of dishes was made after 1921 during the prewar years.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
