I believe the reason that paperweights were made into decorative works of art, was perhaps to give the mind a brief diversion from whatever tedious task is at hand. Since some substantial object needs to secure our papers from wafting to the floor, rather than a nondescript lump, we have these fascinating and sometimes thought-provoking pieces to admire.

This paperweight is a dome type, with the image of a fanciful fish artfully carved from the bottom, presenting a marvelous 3-dimensional effect. The color is a soft lavender which enhances the carving even more. Being a fan of the beaches and water, this fish can lighten a mood at a glance.

As with others in this collection, I felt the need to find out how this was done, and found that this process is done with a "vertical cylindrical grinding machine", call VG engraving. Apparently, once the original design is created by the artist, this machine enables the image to be reproduced. This is thus not a one of a kind, but a beautiful adaptation of an original design.

The designer of this piece was the well known Oleg Cassini. Noted for his very stylish clothing designs, worn for Hollywood stars and First Ladies alike, Mr Cassini has also distinguished himself as a designer of luggage, watches, wedding dresses, and crystal. This paperweight is one of his crystal pieces, and does bear his signature, etched on the lower edge of the base. I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
