Little Leather Library / Little Luxart Library - 30 Book Set - early 1920's

I was not familiar with these little classic books, however, I was not around in the 1920's. When I found them in a shoebox in the depths of my dad's closet,I was amazed that these tiny books actually contain the stories and poems that have continued through generations and the changes in literary preferences.

Research revealed that these tiny 3-1/4" x 4" books were actually sold originally in, of all places, Woolworth's (the Dime Store people). They were originally manufactured as Little Leather Library between 1916 and 1923, and the covers were actually real leather. One of our books here is from that group - - "The Bear Hunt" by Leo Tolstoy. It is pictured amoung the photos here.

In 1924, the publisher, Robert K. Hass, Inc. took over the production. The cover pages read "Robert K. Haas Inc., Publishers, (formerly Little Leather Library Corporation) New York, N.Y." The remaining 29 books in our set were from this publisher, and were produced between 1924 and 1925. The covers of these books were then made of a leatherette material, and the name changed to Little Luxart Library.

The condition of these is fairly good, considering their age. Interestingly the first and last pages of the books in the leatherette collection are discollored to an overall tan color. This is the result of contact with the inner side (suede-like) of the leatherette material. There is a varying amount of light wear on the books, but nothing that could not be gently restored. They are in nice readable condition, if handled gently, as the paper is somewhat fragile. Many of them are exceptionally nice. The one original leather, the Tolstoy, shows the most wear. Please see the photos, and feel free to request additional information.

I did not list all of the titles and authors; however, I will be happy to provide a listing. Just use the contact us tab to inquire.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition. Please examine the pictures and contact us with any questions, to request additional pictures, or to contribute further information, by using the Contact tab on our Home page.
