Tiffin Franciscan Heavy Crystal Punch Bowl and large Torte Plate - with 12 Cups (sorry - SOLD )

One look at this magnificent Punch Bowl and Huge Plate says this is NOT your average Punch Set. I do not have a manufacture date on this set, I can only say that it entered my home when I was a child in the early 1950's. My memories are of that bowl filled with, not punch, but Egg Nog each Christmas. (My job was to sprinkle nutmeg on each serving.) Sometimes the plate sat beneath the bowl; however, often my mother would set it on the buffet table filled to overflowing with the most fantastic array of holiday treats ! It was also used one time, filled with punch, for the 65th wedding celebration for my grandparents. That time mom made a beautiful wedding cake and placed it on that enormous plate.

The manufacturer was Tiffin Glass, well known for fine crystal products. The pattern, I believe, is Williamsburg. Unlike the other Punch Sets I have owned, and that are listed on this site, this is decidedly a very clear, very heavy lead crystal. Both the bowl and the plate are a full 3/8 inch plus thick. The clarity that defines fine crystal is very visible (even though it is difficult to show in my photographic attempts). The Punch Bowl alone weighs 11# 12oz. and the Torte Plate weighs a full 12# by itself. That is almost 24 pounds of crystal ! The cups are a more traditional glass product, although they were part of the set. The pattern matches; however, the glass is not as refined. We actually used those clear cups that came with the oval hostess sets, so popular at that time.

The Punch Bowl measures 13-1/2 inches across the rim, overall width is more likely 14 inches. The bowl has a short raised base, and is just under 7 inches tall. The oversized Torte Plate, of course can be used as an underplate for the bowl. The plate measures a full 20 inches across and stands 2-3/8 inches above table height. The 12 Punch Cups have the same pattern and are a standard size, 2-5/8" high by 2-7/8" diameter, with a closed handle.

All of the items are in wonderful condition, with no damage or signs of wear. I remember well that the Punch Bowl and Plate were ONLY washed by my mother. Once they were passed on to me, I assumed that same exclusive roll. They were wrapped and stored carefully. It is now time for them to celebrate more weddings, holidays and special events.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
