Patch Box ( unmarked silver) - Hand tooled and Inlaid - Beautifully Intricate and Unique

We recently acquired a small collection of interesting older metal boxes, each unique in its own way. At first glance I assumed they were pill boxes, then I was told they were perhaps snuff boxes. Because we derive much pleasure from the research we do into the uses and origins of the items on this site, our quest began to identify each one. The result? They were not really snuff boxes, as we learned that those were larger, about 3" in diameter, and ours average about 1-1/2". They are called Patch Boxes, and were utilized by ladies to hold the tiny patches or beauty spots that they were accustomed to placing on their faces, to accentuate a feature - - quite the fashion at the time.

Next came the task of identifying the materials and methods of artistic decoration of each small box, and also the country of origin. We have done our best; however, please feel free to correct us if you find any of our assumptions to be inaccurate. We are not experts, just people who enjoy things old and interesting.

This Patch Box is oval in shape. It measures 1-3/4" long by 1-1/4" wide and is 3/4" high. There are no hallmark or other markings of any kind that I can find; however it does pass the non-magnetic test and the bottom and upper edge of the base, as well as the areas around the inlays definitely appear to be silver. After taking the photos, I gently applied a bit of silver polish to the smooth bottom of the box, and it removed the tarnish to reveal lovely gleaming silver. The sides and lid of this lovely little box have been intricately hand tooled to create a textured surface with numerous raised receptacles for what look like gems, but is apparently clear gem colored material that has been inlaid and perhaps fired to a melting point. The background surface has either the same type of material or a wash of gold. I apologize for my lack of knowledge of this process of decoration, but I wanted to describe how truly attractive this piece is. To complete the elegant look, the entire inside of the box has a green transparent enamel type finish over the silver.

The condition of this piece is especially nice. The box and lid fit together nicely, and have no dents or damage that I can find. There are no missing inlays or damaged areas. The only thing I notice is that the bottom has quite a bit of shallow scratch or sanding marks, which I cannot tell whether they were part of the process of smoothing the bottom, or if they occurred later. They do not detract from the beauty of this piece. Please check the photos and feel free to contact us if you have questions.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
