Patch Box of Siam Sterling depicts Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun)

We recently acquired a small collection of interesting older metal boxes, each unique in its own way. At first glance I assumed they were pill boxes, then I was told they were perhaps snuff boxes. Because we derive much pleasure from the research we do into the uses and origins of the items on this site, our quest began to identify each one. The result? They were not really snuff boxes, as we learned that those were larger, about 3" in diameter, and ours average about 1-1/2". They are called Patch Boxes, and were utilized by ladies to hold the tiny patches or beauty spots that they were accustomed to placing on their faces, to accentuate a feature - - quite the fashion at the time.

Next came the task of identifying the materials and methods of artistic decoration of each small box, and also the country of origin. We have done our best; however, please feel free to correct us if you find any of our assumptions to be inaccurate. We are not experts, just people who enjoy things old and interesting.

This Patch Box is rectangular in shape. It measures 1-7/8"long by 1" wide and is 9/16" high. There is a clear marking stamped into the bottom, that reads Siam Sterling. Our research tells us that the country of Siam ceased to exist in 1939, when it became knows as Thailand. The Siam Sterling designation was continued well into the 1950's and beyond, possibly as late as the early 1970's. The top decoration on this box appears to be some type of white opaque stone with silver inlaid into it. This inlaid design depicts Wat Arum, The Temple of Dawn. This is one of the figures illustrated on many of the Siam Sterling pieces, and frequently found on the Niello jewelry pieces from Thailand. (We do have several pieces of Siam jewelry, which can be found under the Jewelry category.

The condition of this piece is very nice, although not perfect. The box opens and closes smoothly and securely and has no major damage. There are some minor dents on the bottom of the box. Also, on the lower right edge of the white stone, there appears to be a sliver missing. I actually did not notice it until I began examining it with a magnifier. This flaw is visible in the last photo. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions.

I try to describe the items on this site as accurately as possible; however since most of the items are either antique or at best vintage, due to their age, they are sold in "as is" condition.
